| |
Roero, Piedmont, Italy
Reviews
- Winery Notes: A perfect introduction to Nebbiolo, offering a stunning blend of dark tobacco, rich, plummy fruit, and the deep scented complexity of an antique spice closet.
PWC Staff Notes
- Anìa is pronounced ah-Nee-ah.Only 350 cases made.
- Just ½ bottle per vine!
- 100% Nebbiolo cultivated from 80 year-old vines.
- Nebbiolo d’Alba and Roero are the “younger brother and sister” of Barolo and Barbaresco. Aged less, they are often softer wines, although coming from the same high-quality, loving craftsmanship as their austere siblings.
Inside Info
- The Roero is situated in the northeastern-most part of the province of Cuneo, just outside of Alba in Piedmont. It owes its name to an ancient family that held the district, a hilly zone, as a feudal possession.
- After the women of the famous Tre Donne estate inherited the vineyard from their father a decade ago, youngest sister Daniela met and fell in love with another local winemaker, Mauro Barbero. Mauro recalls that they first met at a dance hall where his future sweetheart was moonlighting. Because they both had their hands full helping their families with production during the day, and because she worked at night while he was raising dogs, Mauro said there was a decision to be made: “It was either sleep, or Daniela…so I chose Daniela.”
- Mauro’s family has been making wine for countless generations. When asked how long the Barbero family has owned their vineyards, Mauro’s answered simply: “Sempre...” ( “Always”).
